Bereavement advice
When someone dies, it can be overwhelming. There is a lot that needs to be done at a time when you may feel ill-equipped to deal with it. It’s important to remember that support is available.
We have recently updated our advice about bereavement. Find out more about the new version of our Coping with bereavement guide and the advice and support available on our website.
Our advice covers:
- Looking after yourself when someone else dies
- Things to do after a death
- How to support someone you know who has been bereaved
Coping with bereavement guide
The updated guide Coping with bereavement | Independent Age now includes advice on handling finances after a death. You may suddenly be facing unexpected expenses, including funeral costs, and the death may have had an impact on your income.
The updated guide includes ways to minimise costs following a bereavement, as well as how to claim any benefits you may be entitled to.
It also covers getting support following the funeral, adjusting to living on your own and much more.
Grief Chat
If you want to speak to somebody about a death, you can reach bereavement experts by clicking on the GriefChat box in the bottom corner of our When someone dies | Independent Age advice page.
GriefChat counsellors are experienced in supporting bereaved people and will listen to your story, explore how your grief is affecting you and help you to find any additional support you might need.
The service is free and available Monday-Friday, 9am-9pm or by email out of these hours.
