We are deeply concerned that the Government’s plans to reform the welfare system will have a devastating impact on unpaid carers and their families. We are proud to stand alongside Carers UK and the Carer Poverty Coalition in opposing these cuts.
Please sign Carers UK’s open letter to the Prime Minister today and join us in calling on the Government to immediately reconsider their proposals. You can add your name here. You can also write to your MP about the campaign here.
The Government’s plans to tighten eligibility for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) will see 150,000 unpaid carers lose their benefits’ entitlements by the end of the decade, as PIP is a key ‘gateway’ benefit for many claiming Carer’s Allowance.
Families who no longer receive both benefits face losing more than £8,000 a year from November 2026. These changes will result in a £500 million cut in the financial support provided to carers by 2029/30 – the biggest cut to entitlement since Carer’s Allowance was introduced in 1976.
Far too many carers already face financial hardship – 1.2 million carers live in poverty, including 400,000 in deep poverty. If these cuts go ahead, even more will be pushed into crisis – struggling to afford food, heating, and other essentials.
We need your help today to raise awareness of this crucial campaign. Get involved by:
- Signing the open letter to the Prime Minister.
- Writing to your MP.
- Supporting the campaign on social media and encouraging family and friends to get involved.
- Telling Carers UK what you think about the proposals here.
- Finding out more on Carers UK’s website and read their detailed briefing on how the reforms will impact carers.
We know that these changes will be concerning for many carers and their families. For information and advice, please visit Carers UK’s Help and Advice pages, contact advice@carersuk.org or call their helpline on 0808 808 7777 (Monday to Friday, 9am-6pm).
